Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted through the bite of infected ticks, most commonly in certain regions of the United States. Early symptoms may include fever, headache, fatigue, and rash. In specific high-risk situations, a single dose of doxycycline may be recommended after a tick bite to help reduce the risk of developing Lyme disease.

What is Lyme disease and how do you get it from a tick bite?
Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bite of infected blacklegged ticks (commonly called deer ticks). Not all tick bites cause Lyme disease, but risk increases when a tick is infected and attached for an extended period.
Can Lyme disease be prevented after a tick bite?
In certain high-risk situations, Lyme disease can be prevented after a tick bite using post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). When specific clinical criteria are met, a single dose of doxycycline taken soon after tick removal may reduce the risk of developing Lyme disease.
